Introduction

• At the Institute for Interdisciplinary Mountain Research of the Austrian Academy of Sciences, I pursue the approach of montology—a sustainability-oriented field of human-environment research on mountain regions. Considering the notion of verticality, my current focus is on rural–urban development and land use in the central Andes and the eastern European Alps.
